About Opening Guessr
Opening Guessr is a free anime opening quiz. You hear an anime's opening theme and have to name the anime it's from. It's a project that started for fun to be played on call on discord by me and a few friends. We loved playing Aniguessr's guess the opening game but the hard difficulty animes were just always too hard and we'd have to keep moving to the next day to keep playing for extended sessions. We also wanted an intergration with our MAL lists so we can guess opening from animes we know we've seen. So Opening Guessr was born.
How to play
- Pick a pool of anime to draw openings from: by Difficulty (Easy / Medium / Hard, based on Aniguessr's difficulties so can be used for practice lol), by Popularity (Top 50 to Top 2500), or load your own My MAL List.
- Optionally narrow the pool down with a genre filter.
- Play 5 rounds. Each round plays a 40-second clip of an opening (from about 25s to 65s in). Type the anime's name — autocomplete suggests matches as you type. Press Enter to submit (Esc closes the suggestions).
- Get it right to score points, then move on to the next round. Your best 5-round total is saved as your high score in your browser.
Audio vs. Video Clue
You start in Audio mode. If you're stuck, unlock the Video Clue to reveal a blurred video of the opening — but because it's a hint, a correct video-clue answer is worth 500 points instead of the 1000 points an audio answer earns. You can also open the full opening at any time to watch it unblurred.
Where the data comes from
The anime list, popularity ranks, scores, years, and genres are pulled from the Tenrai API (the top ~2500 most popular anime). The opening videos, audio, and song titles/artists come from the AnimeThemes API. The "My MAL List" mode fetches your own list through the MyAnimeList API. All opening media is used for identification and quiz purposes.
